How the system works

Read the employment framework before the vacancy.

NSW public-sector role descriptions commonly identify focus capabilities and behavioural indicators. A strong application treats these as assessment evidence, not decorative language. Grade, award, agency and employment type all matter when comparing roles.

Application method

Build the submission the panel asked for.

  • Start with the role description’s essential requirements and focus capabilities.
  • Prepare specific first-person examples at the required capability level using the behavioural indicators as a calibration tool.
  • Answer targeted questions directly before adding context; a polished cover letter does not substitute for required responses.
  • Expect more than one assessment method, such as interview, written task, work sample or referee check.

Executive-office reality

What the title may hide

The market spans departmental secretaries and deputy secretaries, ministerial-facing teams, statutory authorities and local health districts. Health executive support may sit under different employment instruments from central agencies.
